We were recently approached by Mr Black, a resident of Ringwood, who was looking to breathe new life into his patio. He asked the team at Fletchamoore to restore and improve the condition of his patio’s mortar joints through repointing.
About the Project
Over time, the mortar between the slabs on a patio can start to deteriorate due to weathering, moisture, and wear and tear. Removing the crumbling mortar and replacing it with fresh mortar not only brings back the patio’s original charm, but also enhances its stability and protects it from water damage.
After arriving at Mr Black’s property, we began by examining the 105m2 patio to see how much the slab jointing compound had deteriorated and to figure out the best way to fix it.
Once we had a plan in mind, we thoroughly cleaned the patio surface, making sure to get rid of all the dirt, debris, and loose mortar before moving forward.
We then removed the old mortar from the joints, being careful not to damage the surrounding slabs. We took the time to clear out any loose debris and dust from the joints, creating a clean surface for the new mortar.
The patio was made up of grey Indian sandstone slabs. To match the slabs’ design, we chose an Easy Joint compound called Basalt, which is a darker colour and would complement the slabs. We then applied the fresh mortar into the joints, pressing it in firmly for complete coverage and a uniform appearance. We took the extra step of smoothing the mortar joints to blend them seamlessly with the existing joints.
Finally, we made sure to clean up any excess mortar from the surface of the slabs before letting the new joints cure.
The Finished Patio
By replacing the worn-out joints with high-quality compounds, we gave the patio a fresh new look and protected it effectively against damage and water leakage. This left Mr Black with a beautiful patio he can enjoy for years to come.
