Looking to make their Arne Nature Reserve car park safer and more user friendly, the RSPB contacted Fletchamoore to resurface the entrance and mend any potholes.
As a popular nature reserve and natural space in Wareham, Dorset, the site sees a high level of traffic, requiring a durable surface that can withstand hundreds of visitor cars per week.
In particular, the Arne Nature Reserve is famed for being one of the few places where all six of the UK’s native reptiles can be found, so it is both a popular and highly important natural area.
.
About the Project
It was important to start afresh in order to get the best possible finish for the car park entrance and improve durability for years to come. Therefore, Fletchamoore started by removing the existing macadam surface with a planer, creating a blank slate to work from.
Then, to resurface the area, we used a 10mm stone mastic asphalt course, laying a 60mm thick layer to cope with the demands of future footfall. We also added concrete kerbs, to improve the overall durability and aesthetics.
In total, we worked on an area of 110m² for the car park entrance, working quickly and efficiently to limit the disruption caused to visitors and wildlife.
In addition to our work on the car park entrance, we also carried out maintenance on the gravel car park. This involved filling potholes and grading and levelling the gravel surface to make it safer for visitors.
The Final Cark Park Areas
The car park entrance has been completely resurfaced, giving visitors clear and easy access to the main car park. It is also safer to walk on and can better accommodate wheelchairs and pushchairs.
The gravel car park is now much easier to traverse, facilitating smoother parking and giving visitors a good first-impression of the nature reserve.
