What is Tarmac?
A tarmac driveway is made up of crushed stones pushed together. In the past, the mixture included tar to stick the stones together – which is where the name came from. However, nowadays, it is unusual to find tar in the material.
How Is It Different To Asphalt And Macadam?
Asphalt and Macadam are similar to tarmac and can be used in the construction of driveways. However, they have a few differences.
Asphalt
Asphalt is a mixture of aggregates and stones similar to tarmac. However, it contains a higher level of bitumen, the sticky, black, and highly viscous liquid or semi-solid form of petroleum that binds the stones together.
Macadam
Macadam consist of layers of crushed stone or gravel compacted together and bound with a mixture of fine stone dust and water.
Benefits of a Tarmac Driveway
Tarmac driveways have become incredibly popular because they offer many benefits.
Durability
Tarmac is a very durable material and can withstand heavy traffic and harsh weather conditions, lasting many years without any major repairs.
Easy Maintenance
Aside from the occasional sweeping and cleaning, tarmac driveways need very little attention and maintenance.
Cost-effective
Tarmac is quite a cheap material to get hold of. This, combined with its durability and strength, makes it an incredibly cost-effective material for any driveway.
Quick Installation
The standard timeframe for the installation of these driveways is just a few days, meaning there is little disruption to your day-to-day routines.
Versatility
Tarmac is versatile and can be laid in a driveway of any shape or size. Even if your driveway is an unusual or weird shape, we can install a tarmac driveway and have it look perfect.
Recyclable Material
At the end of its lifespan, tarmac can be recycled and repurposed. This means, in the long run, you are choosing an environmentally friendly option.
How Long Will A Tarmac Driveway Last?
After proper installation and with good upkeep, a tarmac driveway can last anywhere between twenty and thirty years. It is important to bear in mind that several factors will impact a tarmac driveway’s lifetime.
Common factors include:
- The quality of the materials used
- The thickness of the surface layer
- The frequency and quantity of maintenance
Poor installation or lack of maintenance can lead to a number of problems, such as potholes, cracks, and other issues that can drastically reduce the driveway’s lifespan. A tarmac driveway may not last more than ten to fifteen years in these situations.
Process Of Installation
The first step in the construction of a tarmac driveway is to excavate the current base, level it out and lay kerbs or edging stones.
Then the sub-base is laid. This layer typically uses aggregates such as limestone or crushed stone. To ensure the layer is level and a solid base is laid, heavy machinery, such as a roller, is frequently used.
With a sub-base in place, the binder course, also known as the base or base course, is the first layer of tarmac applied. A hot mix of asphalt concrete, consisting of aggregates and bitumen, is spread evenly over the compacted sub-base using paving machines. The binder course is then compacted thoroughly to achieve the desired thickness and density.
Once the binder course has been laid and compacted, the surface course is applied on top.
A heavy roller is then used over these two layers to remove air voids and achieve a smooth and even surface.
The tarmac then needs to be left for several hours while it cures.
What To Do In Preparation
As with anything, preparation is key for a successful installation of a tarmac driveway.
The company you are using will do most of the heavy lifting when it comes to preparing your site, such as completing the excavation of the existing ground.
However, before they arrive, it can be helpful if you clear away any debris, vegetation, or obstacles that may interfere with the installation process.
