Asphalt is a mixture of aggregates and stones similar to tarmac. However, it contains a higher level of bitumen, the sticky, black, and highly viscous liquid or semi-solid form of petroleum that binds the stones together.
Macadam
Macadam consist of layers of crushed stone or gravel compacted together and bound with a mixture of fine stone dust and water.

How Long Will A Tarmac Driveway Last?

Process Of Installation
The first step in the construction of a tarmac driveway is to excavate the current base, level it out and lay kerbs or edging stones.
Then the sub-base is laid. This layer typically uses aggregates such as limestone or crushed stone. To ensure the layer is level and a solid base is laid, heavy machinery, such as a roller, is frequently used.
With a sub-base in place, the binder course, also known as the base or base course, is the first layer of tarmac applied. A hot mix of asphalt concrete, consisting of aggregates and bitumen, is spread evenly over the compacted sub-base using paving machines. The binder course is then compacted thoroughly to achieve the desired thickness and density.
Once the binder course has been laid and compacted, the surface course is applied on top.
A heavy roller is then used over these two layers to remove air voids and achieve a smooth and even surface.
The tarmac then needs to be left for several hours while it cures.
