St Mary’s Church required resurfacing of its entrance road and areas of the main car park to address surface wear and improve access. The existing macadam had begun to break down at the front entrance, creating uneven areas and visible patching. Fletchamoore was appointed to carry out commercial tarmac surfacing works with careful planning to maintain daily access throughout their programmes.

The works covered approximately 206m² of entrance road resurfacing, alongside targeted car park repairs. The programme was structured to address underlying surface fatigue, improve surface levels and provide a uniform finish across the entrance and adjoining parking areas.

About the Project

The resurfacing works at St Mary’s Church focused on restoring the main entrance road and addressing isolated failures within the car park. As the primary access route, the entrance road required a consistent surface profile and clear boundary definition alongside the public footpath. All works were phased to maintain safe vehicle and pedestrian movement during the programme.

We began by planning out approximately 31m² of existing macadam at the front entrance and removing the material from the site. A further 30mm was planned from the wider entrance road to create a sound base for the new surface layers. Up to 10m² of patching was carried out in the main car park to strengthen localised areas of deterioration.

To reinforce the edge adjoining the public footpath, 150mm x 50mm precast concrete edgings were installed and haunched with concrete. This created a clearly defined boundary and reduced the risk of edge movement in areas with frequent turning vehicles.

The resurfacing build-up comprised:

  • 50mm 20mm Dense Bituminous Macadam Binder Course.
  • 30mm thickness of 6mm or 10mm Stone Mastic Asphalt Wearing Course.
  • Edge sealing with a torch on overbanding tape.

The binder course provides the load-bearing base required for a site with daily vehicle movement. The Stone Mastic Asphalt wearing course offers improved surface texture and resistance to surface fretting. All layers were mechanically compacted to ensure uniform levels across the entire 206 m² area.

The End Result

Following completion of the works, St Mary’s Church now has a resurfaced entrance road and improved car park areas, providing a consistent and reliable access route. The new surface is evenly compacted, clearly defined along the public footpath edge and free from the defects previously present at the entrance.

The renewed surface levels now provide smoother vehicle transitions at the entrance and improved ride quality across the carriageway. Clearly defined edges reduce trip risks along the footpath boundary, while the completed patching removes weak points that previously required short-term repairs.

For St Mary’s Church, the renewed entrance road supports regular visitor access, services, and community events, with a stable, well-finished approach to the site.
