Mr Ireson, a resident of Lytchett Matravers, recently tasked Fletchamoore with constructing a hardstanding on his land for his touring caravan. It would need to be strong and durable enough for the caravan to stand on for long periods, whilst still maintaining an aesthetically pleasing appearance.
About the Project
First, we needed to prepare the substrate for the materials to be laid. We did this by clearing the 24m2 area of all debris, hedges, and small trees, then excavating the existing soil surface. This created a clear, even layer for us to work on.
Our next move was to lay a sub-base, which would be the main load-bearing layer of the hardstanding. We did this by laying and consolidating crushed limestone.
The sub-base would act as a foundation for the slabs to be laid onto, helping to spread the load of vehicle traffic evenly. It would also help with water drainage. Limestone chippings make for an excellent sub-base material, as they can be firmly compacted to form a strong layer with great load-bearing qualities.
Once the sub-base was laid, we installed a series of concrete edgings. These would act as a rigid support for the slabs whilst providing a neat and clean border.
After this came the slabs themselves. We lay several heavy-duty slabs on a full grit mix bed, which would cushion the slabs and make sure the finished surface was extra smooth.
Finally, we finished the hardstanding by laying 20mm clean shingle between the slabs.
The Finished Hardstanding
The completed hardstanding provided a robust, attractive, and level surface that was more than capable of withstanding the heavy load of the caravan – a result both we and our client were particularly happy with!
