A worn or uneven driveway can quickly affect both access and the appearance of a property. Throughout Dorset, homeowners often turn to tarmac driveway installation as a reliable way to replace ageing surfaces and create a clean, durable entrance. Poorly maintained driveways can lead to drainage problems, surface cracking and reduced kerb appeal, particularly where older macadam has begun to break down.
Professional installation ensures the driveway is properly graded and compacted, helping to manage surface water drainage and improve long-term performance.
This project in Ashley Heath, Poole, included decorative block paving detailing, hardwood driveway gates, and a dedicated parking area designed to improve both access and appearance.
About the Project
The project began with full site preparation, creating the conditions for a stable, long-lasting driveway installation. The existing macadam surface was removed and disposed of before preparing the foundation for the new residential tarmac surfacing.
Concrete block paving (200mm x 100mm x 50mm) was installed around the perimeter to reinforce the edges of the driveway and create a clearly defined boundary. A decorative block paved panel was also introduced at the entrance to provide a neat transition between the driveway and the road.
The new driveway surface was constructed using a layered installation designed for durability:
- 40mm 20mm Dense Bituminous Macadam Binder Course.
- 30mm 6mm Stone Mastic Asphalt Surface Course.
Each layer was mechanically compacted to create a level and reliable surface capable of supporting regular vehicle use. The binder course provides structural strength, while the Stone Mastic Asphalt wearing course improves resistance to surface wear and everyday traffic.
As part of the works, two hardwood driveway gates were installed to enhance both security and the overall entrance. The gates measured 1.2m x 1.2m and 1.2m x 2.7m and were fitted to the existing posts using new ironmongery to ensure smooth and dependable operation.
Alongside the main driveway improvements, a separate block paved parking area was constructed to accommodate a van.
The construction process included:
- Excavation and removal of the existing surface.
- Formation of a compacted crushed limestone sub-base.
- Installation of 150mm x 50mm concrete edgings.
- Block paving laid on a 50mm grit bed.
- Kiln-dried sand brushed into the joints to complete the finish.
The finished parking area covers approximately 29 m², providing practical off-road parking for larger vehicles while maintaining a consistent appearance with the main driveway.
The End Result
Following completion, the driveway now provides a stable, consistent surface suitable for regular vehicle use. The improved levels allow vehicles to move smoothly across the entrance while maintaining a clean and well-organised layout.
The reinforced block paving perimeter helps distribute vehicle loads more evenly across the surface, reducing pressure on vulnerable areas of the driveway. This approach supports the long-term performance of the asphalt surface and helps prevent premature wear.
The addition of hardwood driveway gates creates a more defined entrance and provides practical security for the property. Best of all, this is the type of high-quality gates Dorset homeowners often choose to complement their driveways.
The installation delivers several practical improvements for the homeowner:
- Improved vehicle turning space at the entrance.
- Stable surface levels across the driveway and parking area.
- Clearly defined parking space for larger vehicles.
- Reduced ongoing maintenance compared with ageing macadam.
The completed driveway now offers a practical, durable surface, improving the property’s overall kerb appeal.
